The Nanking Massacre, also known as The Rape of Nanking, was an event in the Second Sino-Japanese War. The massacre included mass rape and mass murder by the Japanese troops towards the civilians of Nanjing, which was then called Nanking. Nanking was, at the time, the capital of the Republic of China. The massacre occurred over a period of six weeks, starting on December 13th of 1937. On the 13th the Japanese captured the city of Nanking. During this Japanese troops murdered Chinese civilians and unarmed soldiers. The final death count was 40,000-300,000. Other than murder, the Japanese contributed in widespread rape and looting.
